RO stands for Reverse Osmosis. In an RO water purifier, a pump pushes water through a very fine semi-permeable membrane. Water molecules pass through the membrane, while a large share of the dissolved salts and other dissolved impurities are held back and flushed away.
How it works
- Pre-filters first remove larger particles such as sand, rust and sediment, which protects the membrane.
- The RO membrane then helps reduce dissolved impurities — the part of water quality usually measured as TDS.
- Purified water goes to the storage tank, and the concentrated water carrying the rejected impurities goes out through a separate outlet.
When is RO useful?
RO is commonly recommended where the water has a high level of dissolved solids — for example, many borewell and groundwater sources. If your water tastes salty or hard, RO can make a noticeable difference.
In KENZSTAR purifiers, RO works together with UV and UF or Alkaline stages as part of a multi-stage system.
